The Academy of General Dentistry recommends two checkups per year for people of all ages. A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by our dentists at your initial and periodic dental visits. The complete dental exam includes:
- Examination of diagnostic X-rays (radiographs): X-rays are essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, bone loss, and determining tooth and root positions. The scheduling of X-rays for each patient is individualized at our office and will be determined by our hygienist and dentists.
- Oral cancer screening: Checking the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
- Gum disease evaluation: Checking the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
- Examination of tooth decay and existing restorations: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay, cracks, abrasions, erosion, and fractures.
If Dr. Leo or Dr. O’Shea find cavities, cracked teeth, or broken fillings, they will determine the best option for repair depending on the situation (filling, crown, root canal, extraction, etc). Our office always takes into account your individual needs and wishes when formulating a treatment plan.
We will make sure that your exam as well as any other follow up treatment that may be necessary is conducted in a timely, convenient fashion allowing you to receive the best possible dental care at all times.
